OKU Award Recipients

Each year the Okinawan Karate Do Union selects martial artist who deserve recognition for the sacrifice, dedication and contributions they have given to their chosen art. These are individuals who have demonstrated the greatest of values, character and continued devotion to the perfection of their body, spirit and soul through the study of the martial arts.

Karate Ka of the Year Award

Presented to the under black belt student who has demonstrated exceptional dedication, loyalty and effort, above and beyond the average or typical student. This is a person who is looked up to by the other students and is a very positive role-model. This is also a student who has great potential as a student of the martial arts.



Black Belt of the Year Award

Presented to the black belt who has a long history of providing inspiration to others by example, deed and loyalty to their art. This is a person who has set an example through their dedication to hard work and character.



The Eric Rainey Courage Award

Presented to the martial artist who has demonstrated an extraordinary amount of courage. This award will be given in the spirit of Eric Rainey, a martial artist and victim of cancer, who even at the young age of 8 displayed the bravery of the oldest and wisest warriors.



Outstanding Achievement Award

Presented to the martial artist who has attained an extraordinary accomplishment. This accomplishment does not necessarily have to be martial arts related, however, it is understood that the martial arts are a part of every action and deed within our lives.



Grand Master Allen Wheeler Award

The O.K.U.s Highest Honor. Presented to an individual with a minimum of twenty years of martial arts experience, who has demonstrated continual growth in knowledge and abilities within their chosen art. The recipient of this award has established a reputation of high morals and the highest of character, integrity, spirit, temperament and fortitude.
